A crackdown on membership sharing

Costco has never permitted non-members to shop at its warehouses.

But this year, the retailer took extra steps to enforce that rule.

Customers were already required to present their cards at warehouse entrances and regular checkout lines.

Others have been subjected tointense rounds of questioningat the self-checkout lines from employees trying to confirm their identities.

Back in March, customersspotted a new self-serve free sample kioskstuffed with packs of bagged fruit snacks.

However, Costco has been working behind the scenes to make its app better this year.

These enhancements already seem to be paying off.

Costco shoppers need only create a Sesame account and verify their membership to take advantage of the discounted prices.

Costco plans to one-up itself during the 2024 fiscal year.

Galanti said during a Dec. 14 earnings call that the goal isto open 33 warehousesin fiscal 2024.
